The Viscount Vintage Bus Day

On Sunday, August 15th, 1993, the Viscount Bus & Coach Company organised as spcial event to commemorate 90 years of public transport from the Lincoln Road depot in Peterborough, which first opened in 1902, elecrtic trams operating from there the following year.

The event consisted of several vintage preserved vehicles operating on scheduled local services on the day from 1005 to 1700 hs. and, additionally, three 90 minute excursions of the Peterborough and Stamford area.

The following photographs record this historic and interesting day.

Delaine's Leyland PD2 KTL 780 departs Peterborough's Queensgaten bus station for Yaxley.

HLP 10C an ex Premier Travel AEC with Harrington Cavalier body was used on the 90 minute excursions of the Peterborough and Stamford area. It is seen here before operating the 1405 trip. In the view of the writer who travelled on it, this vehicle in terms of standard of ride and comfort was better than some modern coaches !

SVF 895G a Bristol RE / ECW is seen at the Gunthorpe terminus prior to returning to the City centre.

Leyland Titan BEF 28C is seen at Peterborough with its destination displaying "WORKMEN".
JAH 553D "Old Scarlett", a Bristol FLF with ECW bodywork was new to Eastern Counties. At a time when many cehicles have elecrtonic destination displays, this reminds us of how things once were as the conductor changes the destination externally using the step and handle.

AEC / Plaxton ANL 807B is seen arriving back at Peterborough.
Remaining at Peterborough, in the foreground is Ipsich Buses ADX 63B an AEC Regent with Massey bodywork. In the background is Emblings Leyland Tiger Cub / Plaxton EJR 791.

A sister vehicle to the FLF above is JAH 552D "Pride of Peterborough" which was used on an open top run to Yaxley where it was photographed prior to returning to Peterborough. As this is not normally an open top run, several passengers riding upstairs on the left had to duck on occasions to avoid being clouted by tree branches !
Dews Coaches (of Somersham) UFX 360L, a Bedford VAL, stands between turns at Peterborough.

Milton Keynes Citybus Bristol RE / ECW RAH 681F at Orton prior to returning to the City centre.
Bristol RE / ECW GCL 348N did not actually take part in running any services, but did provide a very interesting static exhibit on the day. A picture of this vehicle when in service can be found in the Cambus feature in this site.
