The Swindon Class 120's

The Swindon 3 Car sets were frequently seen in our area particularly on the Lincooln St. Marks to Nottingham route and also on excusrions and services to Skegness. Sadly only 59276 has been preserved on the Great Central Railway. A detailed history of the class can be found at the Railcar Association's web site. The following photographs recall these fine units during their final years of service.

A reminder of the good old days when it was possible to get a forward

view through the cab. In this shot taken from a Lincoln bound Swindon

set, we see another member of the class on the Nottingham - Lincoln

route.

The Swindons occasionally worked local services on the Nottingham to

Skegness route. This example is seen arriving at Boston on its way to

Skegness. Since this picture was taken in 1980, the buildings and

canopy on this platform have gone along with the blue enamel platform

signs and the footbridge in the distance has been replaced.

Swindons would often work excursions to Skegness. A three car set is

seen on platform 6 at this location.

In latter years of operation, some sets appeared with a class 101

Metro Cammell middle carriage in lieu of the Swindon one whilst

others had the middle carriage removed and worked as two cart sets.

This example at Skegness is looking rather worn .
