The Sheffield Supertram

Prior to the commencement of the service, numerous trial runs were undertaken as illustrated in this picture of a tram approaching the City Centre in January 1994.

This very attractive Commercial Street Bridge takes the tram route over one of the busy roads leading to the city centre.

A view of the principal triangular junction on the system. Behind the photographer is the route to the city centre and Middlewood and Malin Bridge termini. The route to the left leads to Meadowhall whilst that on the right to Midland Station, Herdings Park and Halfway. The photograph was taken prior to the opening of the Supertram system to the public.

Commercial Street Bridge featured earlier also has one of the steepest gradients on the network as is illustrated in this photograph of a tram on a trial run in January 1994.

The tram stop alongside Sheffield Midland station. Access to the railway station is gained be a footbridge and then to the rest of the railway station by the main railway footbridge. On October 25th, 1995, the remainder of the system opened and travel on all services was free the entire day :-) The writer of this therefore took the opportunity to explore the system and all the following pictures were taken on this day !
