ST. MARK'S BUS STATION REMEMBERED

An extract from the 1959 British Transport Commission Annual Report with an illustration of the newly opened St Marks bus station at Lincoln.

Fifteen years later the view has changed little, although the NBC emblem has appeared above the exit.

An view inside St Mark's shows (left to right) 2213 (LFU 713) a Bristol LS5G new in 1954; 2134 (GBE 844) a 1950 Bristol K which was unique in having its front end rebuilt in 1958. Next to it are an unidentified Bristol MW and an SC4LK.

What looks now like a bus museum is in fact a view of the inside of St. Marks in 1975, a delightful mixture of vehicles. Nearest to the photographer on the left is a 1959 Bristol MW 2227 (SFU 852) whilst on the right is a 1971 Bristol VR 1910 (MFE 492J).

A later view taken in summer 1983. AMongst the assortment of vehicles is (on the right) Bristol VR 1961 (SVL 171W) which awaits departure on service 6 to Skegness in the days before dual purpose seated vehicles were used.

Leyland National 2813 (GTL 356N) was new to the LRCC in 1975 and is viewed in that year on the service 6B to Fiskerton.

Two Leyland Nationals. On the left is 2831 (SVL 838R), the last new Leyland National to be purchased by the LRCC. It is on the route 25 to Retford which was withdrawn in 1986. Beside it by contrast is one of the first Leyland Nationals purchased by the Company, 2802 (UFE 804M), new in 1974 and stood on platform three awaiting departure on service 27 to Gainsborough.

1455 (AVL 744X) is seen on October 25th, 1986, about to depart on the 1105 X67 to Manchester via Newark, Mansfield and Chesterfield, the final day for the X67's from St. Marks. It was a sunny start but was rather damp at Manchester as illustrated in another view of the same vehicle on this site !

Leyland Leopard / Plaxton 1404 (VYM 504M) was acquired from National Travel (London) in 1980. It is seen at St Marks prior to returning to Skegness after working an excursion to the famous Lincoln Christmas Market.

(1303) LJA 613P was one of eight ex Manchester Leyland Atlanteans with Northern Counties bodies which Road Car acquired in 1988. It ius seen here on the Skegness service - rather a long and uncomfortable journey - thankfully much better vehicles are now deployed on the route now branded Connect 6.

In 1985 three new Leyland Olympians with ECW bodies joined the fleet 601 - 3 (B501 - 3 FFW) and are seen at St Mark's before entering service. Despite the curious destination of Peterborough on the first vehicle, all three were destined for Scunthorpe depot for use on the 350 Hull to Scunthorpe service.

There was an earlier attempt to close St. Marks when all service were transferred to the City Bus Station for a period as this notice indicates. The building was therefore relegatated to the status of a bus depot until services were resumed, albeit until the building was closed completely.

An after dark shot in 1993 showing some of the last Bristol LHs in the fleet, 1056 (XFW 951S) being in the front. Visible also is the Company's preserved ex Gash Daimler CVD6 (KAL 578),

October 28th, 1995 marked the end of an era as, after 36 years, the St Mark's bus station was to close completely and all services being transferred to the gloomy and draughty City bus station. This shot was taken on the last day.

Again on the last day, Duple bodied Leyland Tiger 412 (WOI 3002) is about to depart on the 1710 service 601 to Grantham.

Posed side by side especially for the cameras are the Companys preserved Bristol SC4LK and on the right, 601 (B501 FFW) which operated the very last departure from St. Mark's, the 1905 service 601 to Grantham. A special poster (below) was placed in the upstairs window. The buffet was also open to provide champagne for all who attended.

Developers wasted no time and the bus station was completely cleared. The sun sets over the chasm where it once stood.

In its place, a particularly hideous building takes shape and is occupied by Debenhams. In the opinion of the writer, the building is so ugly and out of character with the smart St. Marks area that a view of the completed structure does not merit inclusion !
