LINCOLNSHIRE OPERATORS REMEMBERED

ATKINS

The business of Atkins dated back to 1900 with horse drawn vehicles. 91 years later the business passed to Brylaine Travel. PJV 36S is seen at Sheffield after working the Company's Saturdays express service from Skegness. The sheffield run was operated by Brylaine for many years, although now is operated exclusively by Hunt of Alford.

BLAND

The business of Bland of Cottesmore ceased in 1997. Formerly of Clarkson of South Elmsall, BUA 705X, a Plaxton bodied Leyland Leopard is seen at Oakham after arrival on a service from Stamford in 1996.

ENTERPRISE & SILVER DAWN

This Waddington based independent was acquired by Applebys in 1997. Ex Yorkshire Buses Bristol VR / ECW JYG 431V is seen at Lincoln City bus station on the Waddington service.

Whilst most vehicles in the Company were second hand, one new example was E433 PFU, a Bedford YNV Venturer with Duple Dominant II Express bodywork, new in 1988. It was photographed at Skegness Richmond coach park whilst on a day excursion.

Still in its former owners livery (Clydeside), LMS 162W, an Alexander AD bodied Leyland Fleetline FE30AGR, is seen departing Lincoln on the Birchwood Estate service.

PGA 833V was acquired from Kelvin in 1980 and is seen in that same year still wearing its former operator's livery. This Leyland Leopard was one of only two Alexander AT bodied vehicles in the couinty, the other being Road Car's 1419 which is still in service.

YFC 19V, a Leyland Leopard with Duple bodywork was acquired from The Oxford Bus Company in 1992 and is seen at Boston on the Company's Wednesday service to Lincoln.

VCU 400T, an MCW bodied Leyland Fleetline was acquired from West Riding in 1995 and is seen at Lincoln bus station before working a service to Branston.

HOGG

Compared to some other Lincolnshire operators, Hogg was a relative late arrival in the bus world being established in 1958. It operated a fascinating variety of vehicles and featured here PHG 810K, one of four Bristol RESL6L's with Pennine B46F bodywork which were in the fleet during the 1980's being acquired from Potteries Motor Traction.

Hogg once had six ECW bodied Bristol LH's in its fleet. which all originated from Eastern Counties. Here CNG 525K is seen at Skegness. It was to give several years more service after the Hogg takeover and is featured in the Brylaine section of this site.
Bedford / Duple KBC 740E is seen stood at Norman Avenue in Boston prior to working a service to Horncastle. KBC 740E was a Bedford SB1, chassis number 7817954, fitted with a Duple C41F body.   Hogg acquired it from Milsons at takeover in 1/79; they'dpurchased it in February 1975 from Warren, Neath.   It was new to aLeicestershire operator.    I don't have an "official" withdrawal date, buti t had gone from the fleet in 1983 and my guess is it was disposed of in1982 when large numbers of buses were bought.

In 1997, six years after the Company's takeover by Brylaine Travel, dumped at the former Milson depot in Coningsby was Bedford YRT / Plaxton XRR 598M.

Ford R1114 / Duple Dominant GDO 27W was new to Hogg in 1980 and was photographed whilst at Horncastle Market Place prior to working the former H.H. Milson run to Boston.

Hogg established a very successful daily express coach service from Skegness to London in 1980. Normally, full sized coaches were used but on this very rare occasion, B970 DCA, a Mercedes L608D with Ensor C21F body was used and arrived at the terminus, where it was photographed, full and standing!

In1984 the business expanded significantly and operated holidays in Europe using three coaches which are shown whilst on display in Skegness in 1984. Left to right they are Volvo B10M JNV 627Y, Deutz / Ayats Appolo DVC 357Y and Neoplan Jetliner WTL 921.

HUDSON

RFU 12 is seen at Unity Square in Lincoln prior to working the Company's main route to Horncastle via Bardney. The Company was taken over by Appleby's in the mid 1970's.

LANCASTER

The bus business of J.E. Lancaster of Tetford dated from 1930 and was another which was acquired by Brylaine Travel. In this c.1964 view, we see one UWB 391, an AEC Reloance with Duple Elizabethan C41F body near Skegness Railway Station on the service to Tetford via Firsby and Spilsby. The vehicle was acquired from Holling of Askern in 1963.

One of the Company's vehicles seen at the station goods yard in Skegness prior to working the Friday run to Tetford.

Many years after the Company ceased their operations, in 1998 the remains of what appears to be the vehicle featured above found at the Company's former premises in Tetford. A candidate for restoration?

MARSHALL

Although technically not a bus operator, this ECW bodied Bristol LH VMO 234H was used to transport workers. It was new to Thames Valley (as their 274) in 1969.

Rosemary Coaches
G.E. Dack & Son t/a Rosemary Coaches of Terrington St. Clement was taken over by Eastern Counties many years ago. At Skegness coach park in 1980 is Bristol RE / ECW GVW 918H.
One very interesting vehicle in the fleet was this Bristol REMH with Alexander M type bodywork which was new to Western Scottish in 1969 (T2208) and would have been used on the long distance runs between Scotland and London. It is seen at Skegness in 1980 whilst on a day excursion.

SKEGNESS AERODROME

It is several years ago since the last light aircraft departed on a Pleasure Flight from the aerodrome near Butlin's Camp in Ingoldmells (known locally as "The Butlin's Bombers". At one time it appears they even had their own bus (a second hand OB from the London area) GXD 640 which is seen parked at the eastern end of Scarborough Avenue in Skegness c.1960. Note the LRCC timetable as they also used this stop.
