The Midland & Great Northern Rail Replacement Service

The closure of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway resulted in the Lincolnshire Road Car providing a replacement bus service serving many of the places previously served by the railway. They already had a well established route (65) between Spalding and King's Lynn, but introduced the route 70 on March 2nd, 1959. Unfortunatel, the service was not a success:

".. a substute bus service from Melton Mowbray to Spalding, following very closely the route of the M&GN, had, from the very start, run into difficulties because of poor patronage. On its first day, the service had met with an unpromising response: the 7.50am bus from Spalding had left with only five people on board, and these had all got off before Bourne was reached. The return trip late in the morning arrived at Spalding with only one passenger. The adternoon service fared even worse: the bus travelled empty over most of its route. Although a spokesman for the bus company expressed the view that business would pick up as the service became established, there simply was not any demand for public transport over this route." *

Indeed, the LRCC only operated it for two years and it was then taken over by Barton Transport before being withdrawn completely.

The timetable for the route is reproduced below.
