The Alexander Y type body was first introduced in 1961 and continued in production until 1982 and was, without doubt, one of the most successful bus bodies, several thousand having been produced. In 1971 alloy construction saw the introduction of the AY, visually the same as the earlier type. Various chassis were used, Leyland being the most popular as illustrated in the table below.

Not surprisingly the type was particularly popular with Scottish operators, although some English operators purchased some new as illustrated in the table below:

Having given several years faithful service to their Scottish owners, several examples found new homes in sassenach territory, some spending their final years in Lincolnshire. The earlier Y type had already found service in the County when a dozen B48F bodied examples on RELL6L chassis were purchased new during 1973/4. Lincolnshire Road Car which had previously been a purchaser mainly of ECW bodied vehicles, acquired the first Y type in 1984 in the form of 1440, SJA 363J, which was later converted to a tow truck ! The Company's acquisition by Yorkshire Traction, also the parent Company of Strathtay, saw AY's transferred to Road Car several years later.

The type is gradually disappearing and are much less commonplace in Scotland then they once were. As can be seen on the table below (grey shaded backgrounds indicating withdrawn vehicles) they are also dininishing in Lincolnshire.
