W. Gash & Sons Remembered

No doubt many will remember the long established business of W. Gash & Sons of Newark which sadly ceased in 1989 when the Company was taken over by Yorkshire Traction and many services and some vehicles passed to Road Car. This feature illustrates a few of the many vehicles operated by Gash. If anybody has any others we could use on this site, please e-mail us.

DD1 (KAL 578) a Daimler CVD6 was new to the Company in 1948. It originally had a Strachan body but was rebodied by Massey in 1962. Seen at Nottingham Victoria bus station (since closed) the vehicle is owned by Road Car.

Throughout their existence, Gash always operated an interesting variety of vehicles. One such was BR5 (GVO 159V) a Bristol LHS6L with Marshall B29F body photographed inside the Bowbridge Road depot during the open day in May 1986 ands was new to Gash in 1975.

B30 (RAU 624R) was a Bedford YLQ with Plaxton Supreme C45F body.

B27 (DAL 655J) a Bedford SB5 with Plaxton C41F body was new to the Company in 1970. It is seen at the Lawn Coach Park in Skegness in 1981, one year prior to its withdrawal from the fleet.

DD7 (LNN 353), a Daimler CVD6 with Duple body was originally destined for Skills but instead was acquired by Gash in 1950.

Another view of DD7 from another angle.

Seen at Newark bus station awaiting departure on the principal Gash route to Nottingham is Leyland Atlantean / Roe ETO 911V. Following the demise of Gash, it passed to Road Car (allocated fleet number 1311) and, at the time of writing, is based at Skegness depot along with another ex Gash vehicle, Leyland / Van Hool MSV 927.

L10 (YAL 392M), a Leyland PSU3B/4R with Plaxton DP51F body was new to Gash in 1973.

Another view of DD7 featured earlier. As well as the open day at the depot in 1986, services on the Newark - Nottingham run were all operated using older vehicles in the fleet such as this. DD7 is seen at Newark bus station prior to departing for Nottingham.

Seen on the same day as the above is KAL 795, a Daimler CVG6 / Massey was new to the Company in 1954 and allocated fleet number DD10.

New in 1948 was DD6 (KNN 959), a Daimler CVD6 with Roberts body stand beside Bristol LHS6L / Plaxton BR4 (WNN 572S).

A view from inside the Gash depot on Bowbridge Road. Nearest is DD12 (JUS 784N) a Leyland Atlantean with Alexander body acquired by Gash in 1982 from Strathclyde PTE. Beside it is Leyland Leopard / Plaxton Derwent L11 (YAL 391M) and a similar vehicle LO8 (GNN 348J).

Another view from inside the depot and, on the left, Marshall bodied Bristol LHS6L BR1 (NVO 772L) beside which is Bedford SB5 / Plaxton B29 (JVO 789K).

A view of the Bowbridge Road depot which was put up for sale following the demise of the Company.
