The Clayton West Branch

The following photographs were taken shortly before the branch was closed to all traffic in 1983.

Currently a section of the trackbed is used by the Kirklees Light Railway.

 

 

Leaving the Woodhead line behind and proceeding up the branch to

Huddersfield, Shepley station was the location where the 3½ mile

single track branch to Clayton West left the main Penistone to

Huddersfield route.

 

 

The official press release from British Rail which marked the beginning of the end for the remaining

portion of the Woodhead route and the Clayton West branch.

 

 

Aboard the class 101 dmu en route to Clayton West, the branch to

which can just be seen in the distance diverging from the main Sheffield

line towards the left. Clayton West Junction signal box is shown above

and the driver collects the token from the signal man before proceeding

down the branch in the lower photograph. It is also illustrated on the

Signal Box site.

 

 

Skelmanthorpe was the only intermediate

station on the branch.
