Brylaine Travel

Brylaine operate a large number of routes through sparsely populated

rural parts of south-east Lincolnshire. Here we see ex Southdown Ford/

Duple PUF 259M is seen making its way through Firsby on the

Monday Market Day service from Wainfleet to Spilsby. This was the

first vehicle to be purchased by Brylaine and is currently in store.

Ford / Plaxton SNF 809R was acquired from Jackson of Altringham in

1982 and is seen at the former Skegness station goods yard.

Brylaine operated several excursions at one time (although these have

long since ceased). Ford / Plaxton JDB 939V is seen at Ullswater on

a day tour of the Lake District. It was acquired from Salopia of

Whitchurch in 1984.

A variation from the large number of Plaxton and Duple bodies owned

at various stages by Brylaine was UTG 312S, a Bedford YMT with

Caetano C53F body which was one of the vehicles acquired with the

business of Hogg of Boston in 1990. It is seen at the Brylaine

Skegness depot after withdrawal from service in 1995.

Another view taken at the Skegness depot, this time of Ford / Duple

NBF 744P.

Ford / Duple FDV 142Y stops at the Market Place in Boston working

a town service to the Woad Farm Estate. It was acquired from Thomas

of Portchester in 1996 and was subsequently re-registerd XAZ 1399.

Ford / Plaxton WIA 7680 was previously registered BCY 284V was

acquired from Evag Cannon of Bolton in 1994. It is seen at the new

Boston bus station prior to working the 58A town service to the

Woad Farm Estate - curiously, although the Lincolnshire Road Car

abandoned operation of town services in Boston many years ago,

Brylaine retains the former's route number !

Between turns at Boston are (left) Ford / Duple ACX 783Y acquired

from Evag Cannon of Bolton in 1994. Beside it is MUT 777W, a

Plaxton bodied Bedford YMT which came from Hogg in 1990.

A820 LEL, a Quest VM / Plaxton, is seen at the Skegness depot.

It was re-registered in the XAZ series in 1999 (XAZ 1301) along with

several other vehicles in the fleet.

YRB 652Y, a Plaxton bodied Ford, was acquired from Plastow of

Wheatley in 1995 and has since been re-registered XAZ 1321. It is

seen arriving at Skegness from the depot to form the Sunday mid-day

service to London. Sadly, the daily Skegness to London express run

was withdrawn in 1999, although Elsey (of Gosberton) still provide a

daily link between Boston and the Capital.

I make no excuses for including three views of what, in my opinion, is

the finest vehicle in the fleet. Ford R1114 / Plaxton has a most

interesting history. It was new c.1974 and was the last of its type to

have this type of Plaxton body fitted. This, and two Bedford engined

examples, were originally for sale by Stanley Hughes a dealer in

Cleckheaton. The vehicles were not sold and ended up being placed

in store for several years (which is why the registration of this

vehicle, E903 DRG, would suggest it is newer than it actually is).

They were subseuqeuntly purchased by Bob Smith Travel of Langley

Park County Durham in 1988 and Brylaine acquired this vehicle from

them in 1994. Apart from the application of the fleetname, all the

fittings are the same as when the coach was new and the operator is

hoping to preserve it in due course. The photographs show it at,

respectively, Spalding, Boston and Skegness.

Brylaine had three Bedford VAS / Duples in the fleet. GTM 123T,

ENP 666W and the above, JRF 161V, which was acquired from Clark

of Barnsley in 1993.

ECW bodied LH CNG 525K was another vehicle which passed from

fleet of Hogg although it was actually new to Eastern Counties. After

several years of service with the Company, it was turned into a static

Rest Room at the Wyberton depot. It is pictured at Skegness (above)

when still in service and below in use as the "tea room". It is hoped

that this vehicle will eventually be preserved.

The Alexander Y type body is almost ubiquitous

amongst Lincolnshire operators. Brylaine acquired

to Fords, USO 1848S from Irvine of Law in 1992 and

the above, USO 184S (now registered XAZ 1413) from

Strathtay in 1987. With the impressive tower of

ST. Botolph's church dominating the background, the

bus is seen departing the Market Place on a town

Service to the Woad Farm Estate.

XNK 199X, a Ford / Plaxton, was acquired from Provenance of St.

Albans in 1994, and is seen at Boston bus station prior to departure to

Spilsby.

Amongst the more recent acquisitions (and along with some other

Lincolnshire operators) have been second hand Leyland Nationals.

At Boston Market Place is CCY 817V (subsequently re-registered

XAZ 1409) was acquired from Arriva North Western in 1998 and is

seen at Boston Market Place. Behind it is G39 SSR which has since

been re-registered XAZ 1297.

and in November 2000 (below).

Leyland National XAZ 1403 ((BUH 219V) was acquired from Filer of

Ilfracombe in 1998 and is seen using the bus wash at the Company's

Wyberton depot on January 7th, 2000.

Amongst the acquisitions in 2000 were two Leyland Lynxes from

Lothian Regional Transport. These were originally dual-door, but

converted tosingle before entering service with Brylaine. XAZ 1399 is

seen at Boston in November 2000. Below, sister vehicle XAZ 1293

departs from Boston on the hourly service to Lincoln.

Ford Transit C603 NPU is seen at Horncastle Market Place after

working the service from Boston. This vehicle was acquired from

Midland Fox in 1995.

Mercedes Benz / Plaxton Beaver 2 S309 DLG is one of four of the

type on loan to the Company. It is seen in February 2000 at South

Street in Boston en route to the village of Wrangle.

New to Brylaine were four Mercedes / Plaxtons, one of which, W967

JNF, is pictured at Boston bus station on August 24th, 2000 whilst,

below, in November 2000 sister vehicle W969 JNF is at Boston

Market Place.

Three East Lancs bodied Bristol VRs were acquired with Hogg in

1990. Here, a rather tatty URN 155R is seen at Boston bus station

before departure to Woodhall Spa.

Another VR, URN 158R, at the Coningsby depot, the former premises

owned by Hogg and H.H. Milson before that.

A nice line up of double deckers at Wyberton depot. Three Alexander

bodied Daimlers were acquired in 1992 from Burman of Dordon. Two

are seen above with DLJ 118L (left) and DLJ 112L (right) whilst in the

middle is Leyland Fleetline / Park Royal OJD 444R, one of two

acquired from kinch of Barton-on-Soar in 1995. The third Daimler

not seen (DLJ 119L) has happily been preserved and is currently with

Yellow Buses of Bournemouth.

Dual doored Leyland Olympian VJO 203X was aqcuired from Oxford

in August 1999. It is seen parked at Coningsby depot in February 2000.

Converted to a towing vehicle was VKM 963J and is seen at Wyberton

alongside defunct Ford Transit A684 JLM.
